Mikaela Straus, also known as King Princess, is an American singer, songwriter and producer from Brooklyn, New York who has seen a burst in popularity over the last year or so as one of the rising stars in the indie-pop scene. She made waves by being the first artist to be signed to mega-producer Mark Ronson’s Zelig Records and released her first single “1950” last year, which charted at #17 on the U.S. Alternative Song chart. Straus has been open about identifying as genderqueer and pens her stage name King Princess as a representation of the complexity of her gender.
She spent much of her childhood at Mission Sound Studio in New York City, where she learned to play several instruments including bass, guitar, piano and drums, as well as production techniques. Her influences come from rock bands such as Led Zeppelin, T.Rex and Jack White.
Straus has released one EP titled Make My Bed and recently released her debut album Cheap Queen. She has released one stand alone single, “Pussy Is God”, in November 2018, which was co-written by actress and former significant other, Amandla Stenberg. Currently, King Princess has released the lead single “Cheap Queen” and second single “Prophet” off the debut record.
Listed as one of Rolling Stones’ Best Songs of 2018 and featured as pop music’s newest crown jewel via Vanity Fair and The Cut, King Princess is an artist to keep your eyes on. Don’t miss her when she brings the Cheap Queen Tour to REBEL on Monday, October 28th. Limited tickets are available via Ticketmaster.
